IP Crimes are a global problem and are not limited to certain geographic areas or types of people. These crimes have devastating effects on all of us and have been tied to terrorism, drug trafficking, and child labor & exploitation to name just a few. Most people truly view IP Crimes as victimless crimes and that it is only big companies that are losing a few bucks. So wrong!
IP Crimes are serious crimes that are “chipping” away at our world economy and our quality of life on a daily basis. There is no other type of crime where the risk is so small and the rewards can be so great. The subjects involved in IP Crimes can make more money selling counterfeit goods than trafficking in narcotics or weapons. We all lose out when our local economies lose millions of dollars each year in lost tax revenue because of these crimes. What about the thousands of local jobs that are lost each year to counterfeiting and piracy?
The war on IP Crimes is no different than the war on drugs. In fact, they are the same. Law enforcement alone can’t stop counterfeiting and piracy. In order to have an effect and control the growth of IP Crimes, the consumers out there buying the counterfeit goods need to be educated on the true effects of counterfeiting and piracy.
Most consumers buying counterfeit goods do not realize that they may be funding organized crime groups, terrorist organizations and street gangs when they are buying these items. Billions of dollars a year are spent by the consumers who are purchasing counterfeit and pirated goods. That money needs to go to hard working, law abiding businesses, who contribute to our communities.
We all need to educate those around us regarding the true effects of trademark counterfeiting and piracy. People need to understand that it is theft and that some bad people are using it as a source to raise money for other very serious crimes. People need to understand that the creators of intellectual property deserve protection. We need to promote creation and innovation.
